The OOo user interface is fine given the capabilities of that program. Plus, it actually follows the native OS theme. What I find depressing is the quality of graphics in the documents themselves, especially in Impress and Draw. The smileys aren't even antialiased! Someone needs to reimplement OOo graphics system using Cairo, I think.

There's no deny how slick the next MS Office is going to be. I'm glad they finally updated the looks of their charts which hasn;t changes since Office 97 (almost 10yrs old now).

I completely agree an interface can make an entire application. It is probably why I never installed Office when I rebuilt and simply have iWorks now. I do wish I had excel sometimes, but not often enough to ever deal with Office again.

No matter how pretty they make the next Office though, it is difficult to imagine it not being completely bloated.

Yep they win, thats why at FREE they still can't convince users to adopt it.

It IS free, but that doesn't mean it sucks less to use it. For home users it maybe good enough, as long as you don't plan on doing anything too serious with it. I think my blood pressure has risen 10 points since I started using it. There are so many quirks it has, compared to Office 2003. Going from 2003 during the day to OOo at night, and then seeing the 2007 videos on Channel 9 and reading all the good stuff in Jensen's blog is why OOo is so depressing. I never appreciated how well 2003 worked until I switched.

I would never use OOo in a business environment though. Stability issues aside, I was getting errors in the spreadsheet that were making calculations off by two decimal places! Now if you're looking to cook the books it might be a good excuse to use it, but errors like that would never be found in any commercial app. Not to mention its compatibility issues with MS Office files. You can't call an app an "Office Replacement" and then not make it compatible with the leading Office formats.
