QOTD

From page 189 of the 9-11 report:

"It would scare the shit out of al-Qaida if suddenly a bunch of black ninjas rappelled out of helicopters in to the middle of their camp. It would get us an enormous deterrence and show those guys we're not afraid." - Bill Clinton [2000]

Napoleon Dynamite

Don: Vote for Summer.

Napoleon Dynamite: Yeah, right, I'm not voting for her.

Don: Then who you gonna vote for?

Napoleon Dynamite: I'm voting for Pedro Sanchez, who do you think?
[Don scoffs and walks away]

Napoleon Dynamite: Hey, Don. Can I have one of those buttons?
[Don hands Napoleon a "Vote 4 Summer" button]

Napoleon Dynamite: [Napoleon tosses it across the hall, stares at Don, and runs away]

Doom 3 preorder

I went to Best Buy last night and preordered Doom 3. You only have to pay $10 right now, and you get this little bonus pack with a little pewter mancubus figurine, a poster, a coupon for $5 off any RTCW game for the PC, and a $10 coupon for an nVidia FX5700 or FX 5900. Then on the release date you just show up with your receipt and they'll take the $10 you've already paid off of the final price. I've never preordered a game before but it makes sense to do it that way. In fact I'm pretty sure that the last game I've bought for the PC was Doom 2 (I'm not 100% positive, but I haven't been able to think of another game that I've bought since). Of course Doom 2 was $35 not $55, damn inflation.

Of course I had to see this deal yesterday. An Audigy 2NX (Dolby 7.1, etc.) for only $52 and free shipping? Considering the crappy onboard sound I have now, I was pretty much obligated to buy it. So that doubled the price of the game so far.

Then I had to get some 7.1 speakers to go along with it. I saw these at buy.com and I couldn't resist. Creative's marketing BS even says that they're the perfect compliment to the Audigy 2NX. So now the final tally of Doom 3 for me is $175! Ah well, I need speakers and a better soundcard anyway. Plus I'm sure Doom 3 is worth it.

It's made me wonder though. If someone as cheap as me is spending this much money on the damn game, how many other people are going to be a sheep like me? I think it'll be bigger than Quake 3 was. It will be a welcome boost to the PC industry.

WebStandardsAwards.com

WebStandardsAwards.com - I agree with most of their picks, but the two that really stuck out are: gedimo.lt and frozentoast.com. Both sites are beautiful, have decent source, do not render in quirks mode, are standards compliant, AND neither contain useless flash movies. They work in tnn, but obviously look better in a real browser.

SpongeBob SquarePants, The Movie (Bigger. Squarier. Spongier. More Absorbant.)

The SpongeBob movie will be 90 minutes of SpongeBob trying to find King Neptune's Crown. Aside from the usual cast from the show it looks like the movie will star Alec Baldwin. It should be out just in time for Thanksgiving. The trailers are pretty funny. (Was that Hunt For The Red October??)

Windows Server 2003 x86_64 delayed to March 2005

Damnit MS, I want my damn 64 bit OS. The beta I'm running now is at least at the release candidate level as far as stability goes. Does that mean XP x86_64 will be delayed too? I'm guessing it is just driver issues and 3rd party software holding it up, although the word on the streets is that they are waiting for Intel (who is strategically sitting on their thumbs as far as x86_64 goes, thanks Intel for delaying the game yet again, jerks).

500!

This is my 500th post, yay! It's come a long way since April of 2002 when it started out as just a dynamic AIM profile. Of course the actual first post that I made was the obligatory clich├ęd movie/music quote. (what? you were expecting a hello world post?)
