I was Was Invented">reading this transcript on research.microsoft.com about the origin of the e-smiley: :-) (_on_the_Internet">from Digg). The last two messages seriously made me laugh out loud...

I have a picture of ET holding a chainsaw in .press file format. The file
exists in /usr/wah/public/etchainsaw.press on the IUS.

Does anyone have a picture of R2D2 holding a seed auger in TeX format?
Or how about a rendering of Yoda with a lathe for use with nroff?
Any pointers to digitized images of short, cute aliens holding power
tools would be greatly appreciated.

Well I thought it was funny.

Environmentalism, Bush-style

This article on Wired just kicked my blood pressure up a notch:

[...] The table shows that on average SUVs receive a higher tax incentive than the most fuel-efficient cars on the market.

People who buy the 33-mpg Toyota Highlander Hybrid, for example, get a $2,600 write-off -- nearly twice the $1,450 tax credit for the 57-mpg Honda Insight. On average, the four most fuel-efficient hybrids, averaging 53.5 mpg, receive a smaller incentive ($2,100) than the five SUVs ($2,310) that get 32.8 mpg. [...]

GM+Subaru partnership dies; Toyota+Subaru partnership born;

I had high hopes about the Subaru/GM partnership. I was hoping to see an AWD Hywire, or maybe a hydrogen-powered WRX. At least I was hoping for cheaper Subaru parts (which I haven't seen). Instead all it resulted in was a crappy looking Saabaru. Ah well, I guess some things weren't meant to last.

Now Toyota is buying the stake in Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru's parent company). So I'll get my hopes up for an AWD Prius or maybe a hybrid Outback. I'm guessing the Subaru US plants will stay open and keep making cars since it has to save all kinds of money in shipping them over here, but who knows.

Lost about LOST? Me Too.

Since I missed almost the entire first season, I've been struggling to keep up with WTF is going on with the show. Here're some resources that I've found that'll help you along the way.

  • abc's official site - standard network stuff
  • Oceanic Flight 815 - the episode guide is great if you've missed a show (or the entire first season, like me)
  • Oceanic Airlines - be sure to check out the seating chart. While viewing the html source I've found a few other clues as well.
    • Like three images:
    • And these passages:
      • "If anyone should find this message, please get word I'm alive and stranded on an island somewhere in the South Pacific. Please send help soon. Things are bad. And they're getting worse... [-Sally]"
      • and "I survived a horrific plane crash and am stranded on an island somewhere Northeast of Australia and Southwest of Hawaii. In the event that I am never found, please forward word of my fate to my parents. [-Robert]"
      • "I would like to inform my financial institutions that I will be late making my September mortgage payment as I am STRANDED ON A FRIGGIN' ISLAND IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!
Please have the Government send a search team immediately. OR don't. Shouldn't all the taxes I pay cover an expense like that?"
      • I survived a horrific plane crash and am stranded on an island somewhere Northeast of Australia and Southwest of Hawaii. In the event that I am never found, please forward word of my fate to my parents.
    • Weekly Trivia Contest
  • Mystery behind the numbers solved? (from digg)

Update 2005/10/04: I've found a few more quotes in the HTML source and new link.

QuickTime HD H.264 codec tip

Here is a tip for all those people that want to play those QuickTime HD clips (the ones that use the new H.264 codec). You can play them with the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. Download the files to your harddrive. Then simply rename the files from .mov to .mp4. The required codecs are: Haali's MP4 splitter and ffdshow (for H.264 and AAC). Playback will be faster and better than with the new QuickTime 7!

(from K-Lite Codec Resource Site)

I highly recommend installing the Mega version, as long as you read the instructions during installation. I can't remember the last time I had to install Realplayer or Quicktime.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em...

...or something like that. Since Kraft, Wal-Mart, & Dean Foods can't easily produce organic foods, they're basically trying to get the definition of "organic" changed.

[...] large corporations such as Kraft, Wal-Mart, & Dean Foods--aided and abetted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) are moving to lower organic standards by allowing a Bush appointee to create a list of synthetic ingredients that would be allowed organic production [...]

80 days

Some great quotes from Conan this past week...

"Officials are saying that it's going to take 80 days to drain all the floodwater from Hurricane Katrina out of New Orleans. When he heard this, President Bush said '80 days? That's almost half a vacation.'"
"The U.S. government has chartered three cruise ships to house families displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Because if it's one thing those people want to see, it's more water."
"Yesterday a spokesperson for NBC said that Kanye West's recent comment that President Bush doesn't care about black people does not reflect the opinion of NBC. Actually, it's NBC's primetime line-up that suggests NBC doesn't care about black people."
